  • 7A Proposal

    Here are the criteria used:
    1. 94 LARGEST enrollment schools + Dallas Jesuit and Houston Strake Jesuit will comprise 7A for a total of 96 schools.
    2. 4 regions with 16 districts. (Most districts have 6 teams, 1 has 4 and 2 have 7 teams).
    3. 4 teams from each district make playoffs
Notable: GHA schools will be represented in 3 of the 4 regions (NOT IN REGION 1). This is because GHA would make up 50% (48 of the 96) of the 7A schools. Katy, being the FARTHEST west district, will be in region 4. Due to the number of CFISD schools, they once again are split into 2 districts in 2 regions. Because of the low number of Austin area teams, a 4-team district is created...and they all make the playoffs (Congrats Del Valle!!!).

Now, present your proposal to the next UIL Legislative Council meeting........Be advised, Frenship, Del Valle, and Lake Travis have all recently passed bond issues to build new high schools.

I plan on doing a new 7A proposal after snapshot day and once I get an idea of where the new schools stand...will take a little time because I'm going to do it all the way down to 2A...its got to make sense in the other classes to be viable..in a vaccum a sensible 7A can be made.....but once you go all the way through is when the rubber meets the road

I think this is an illustration of why Stepp thinks they’ll wait until 2026 to make the move. More schools in play by then as new schools open and they’ll fill out two 7A divisions. The one division models all look kinda ugly. A 7A with two divisions wouldn’t look that different from what 6A is now. Just move the cutoff up to around 2450. A lot more 7 and 8 teams districts and not many 9 and 10 teamers.
Deep playoff runs are, in part, wars of attrition.

Prosper's new HS opens in 2023 will definitely knock Prosper out of the 7A mix for now....Katy has a new HS opening 2024, waiting to see if they will be varsity right away like Paetow...will pull from Katy & Paetow...Fort Bend's new HS also opens in 2023 I believe that will pull primarily from Ridge Point

ignoring the new school openings this scheme looks reasonable. If Westlake and either Bowie or Vandy were to opt up (or somehow in the formulation were forced up) it would make district 14 look better (sorry DV but it feels like an automatic spot in the PO is something folks would be against).

While maybe a little less clear on the geographics lines for the region boundaries, why not swap one of the R3 districts to R2 to put the CyFair schools in R3 and set the bi-district round such that the 2 CyFair districts play each other?

Nice proposal, but certainly if 7A is created, it will have a certain attendance number as the cutoff rather than simply the 94 largest schools by attendance.

I believe BOTH Cy-Fair districts should be in the same region. No other multiple school district has that set up- not even Frisco in 5A.
                I would switch district 8 and 11...

Would 6-man finals move up to Tuesday? Or are we getting back to the ole 4-game, sorry-folks-this-last-game-won’t-kick-off-until-8:50pm days?!?

Isn't that the same thing? You set the attendance cutoff at the 94th school, right?

                      Yep- no cutoff needed.

Lol yes many teams who cant make the playoffs now would. I'd rather wait until districts are bursting at the seams than this. This looks like something that would be from the 1920s.

What about a midterm snapshot to see if any schools have a sudden dramatic change and need to be adjusted up or down for the following season?

1920's??? I doubt there were 10 schools with enrollments over 2500 in the 20's. This model has the average enrollment of around 3200.
