  • Garland vs Galena Park

Just wondering if there are any old timers out there from Garland that went to that title game in 1964 at Rice stadium. Two hard hitting and well coached teams. I wanted the take from a Garland fan on the call
of Galena Parks overturned pass reception and possible TD.

I was at that game. What a thrilling game to watch. I honestly think those were 2 of the best teams to ever put on the pads.
Garland won state in ‘63 with a team of dominant juniors then repeated in ‘64 with these kids as seniors. Galena Park matched Garland blow for blow in this game. Of course the call was right!!! The officiating crew did an excellent job. Those guys all lived in Garland.

Yes he was--still remember him to this day---very tall boy especially for those days.

How would you know what they at Galena Park? You're an alumni of North Shore.

He is not memorialized at GP. You may be thinking of Howard Twilley, who went on to play for the Miami Dolphins. His full-size picture still hangs in the front entrance.

Charlie Riggs was the qb. Everyone from GP to this day talks about that call and says they reran the game film over and over and it showed a catch. I just wanted a Garland take on it. That was two tough teams going at it then. Bill Cloud was superb on both sides of the ball.

Garland defeated Corpus Christi Miller 17-0 in 1963 for the state championship. Temple lost in bi-district to Miller 18-6 in a game in which Miller's running back ran all over Temple. Obviously Garland had an answer for him. Does anyone recall that back's name? I was thinking it was Johnny Roland but I read that he was at Missouri in 1963.
