GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW
Perfection. For the second consecutive season, the Longview Lobos finished their regular season with a perfect 10-0 record. This year's squad ended the season with a dominating 49-14 victory over the Mesquite Skeeters. Longview, winners of 26-consecutive games dating back to last season's perfect 16-0 squad, tied the second longest district winning streak in school history with their 18th straight district win. It was Longview's 3rd victory at E.H. Hanby Stadium in the last five weeks. But now, it's time for some playoff football. And the Temple Wildcats come calling as the Wildcats visit Longview for the time since 82 years. Temple's last visit to Longview came in 1937, in the Class 1A State Quarterfinals. where the Lobos fell behind 12-6 at halftime before a 40-yard pass reception int he third quarter put the Lobos on top 13-12. Frank Lebus finished the game off with a 3-yard run in the 4th quarter as Longview knocked off Temple, 19-12. Friday's contest between Longview and Temple will be the sixth overall meeting between the two programs, and fifth playoff meeting. Longview traveled to Woodson Field in Temple in 1940 and 1954. The 1940 meeting was also a 2A State Quarterfinal meeting, one that saw the mighty Wildcats jump out to an 18-0 lead before Longview crawled back to 18-13 in the 4th quarter. Running Back Ed Dusek controlled the day though, and a 4th quarter score ended Longview's hopes of a comeback. Longview won the lone non-district meeting in 1954, 27-21. The two teams would not play against until 1993, when Temple was the defending 5A Division II State Champions. The Lobos jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one quarter at Pennington Field in the 5A D2 Area Round meeting. But Temple turned it on in the second half to walk away with a 28-7 victory. It would be another 18 years before the two schools would meet at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana in the 5A D2 Bi-District meeting, that saw a windy, windy day control the game. Longview led 7-3 after one half of play, but turned it on in the second with 17 points in the third quarter. The Lobos won, 24-3. Longview comes into the game with back to back 10-0 seasons, but the Lobos are also looking to turn a trend that has happened to them twice before. Longview finished 10-0 in both 1975 and 1976, how the 1976 bi-district contest against Sherman end 10-7 in favor of the Bearcats. Longview also finished 10-0 in 2004 and 2005, only to see the 2005 bi-district contest against South Garland go down in Lobo lore for all the wrong reasons as the Colonels knocked off nationally ranked Longview, 14-13. The Wildcats come into Lobo Stadium, their first visit to this stadium that was open in 1976, looking to buck a trend that has occurred since 2003. Temple is riding a 7-game losing streak in the post season on the top level of Texas High School football. The Wildcats last win in 5A/6A was a 23-17 bi-district victory against Round Rock McNeil back in 2003. However, Temple has won plenty of playoff games since then on the second level, after dropping to 5A in 2014. The Wildcats reached the 5A Division I State Final in both 2014 and 2016, where they fell to both Aledo and Highland Park. Temple no doubt will be looking to buck a notion that they also attempted to dodge Longview last season. The Wildcats were set to come to Longview last season with a victory over Copperas Cove in their finale, much like last season. But Temple did not win. Instead it was Copperas Cove walking off with a 22-18 victory to send the Bulldawgs to Lobo Stadium. It's been a full year since the rumors and speculation has started that the Wildcats threw the game to get a home first round football game against the 4th seed Mesquite Horn Jaguars last season, a game that saw the Jags walk out of Wildcat Stadium with a 45-38 victory. Either way, it's two of the top winningest teams in Texas High School Football history meeting on Friday. One team looking to shock the world, the other looking to just continue chugging on towards repeating.
