    GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW:
A grinding halt to an otherwise amazing season. That's how Longview saw themselves enter the off season following last December's 17-14 loss to Aledo in the State Semi-Finals. The Lobos, 14-0 entering the contest, were flying high even as far as halftime against Aledo, holding a 14-3 lead at the break. However, a disastrous third quarter sealed the fate for a Longview squad that was looking for their second state championship in four years. Coming into the 2023 season, a host of Lobos return to help Longview look toward that quest again. None other than star running Taylor Tatum, who committed to the University of Oklahoma earlier this summer. In his junior season, Tatum broke both the total touchdown and rushing touchdown mark in a single season with 36 and 33 tallies. He finished the season just 165 yards shy of breaking the single season rushing mark in Lobo history. Tatum will enter the 2023 season needing to tally just 13 touchdowns to become the all-time total touchdown leader in Longview history. Kaden Meredith set the mark with 60 just three years ago. Gone from these 2023 Lobos are three year quarterback in Jordan Allen and four year wide receiver Jalen Hale. Hale will be playing at Alabama this fall. Taking over the reigns at quarterback, looks to be Andrew Tutt. Tutt saw sparse action in a back up role last season. As the Lobos head into their 114th season of football, head coach John King will enter his 20th season at the realm of Longview. King sits at 211 wins overall as head coach of the Lobos, good for 80th overall in Texas High School history for coaching wins. He is 17th in active coaching wins. One thing that has alluded Coach King's teams has been consistent success in the first week of the season. Following last season's 36-10 win over McKinney Boyd, Longview improved to just 10-9 in the previous 19 season openers. It is by far the worst winning percentage of any week in a season under Coach King. Last season ended a two-game losing streak in season openers. The 26-point win over Boyd was Longview's largest season opening win since 2011's 30-0 win over Marshall. Longview will turn to a foe this week that they have not met on the gridiron since 1937. In the 86 years since the two teams last met, the two teams have seen various degrees of success with Longview proving to be the one more consistent. The Lobos have found their way to two state championships, including in the season they defeated the Lions, while McKinney registered their one and only in 1979. Longview has had five overall trips to the title game, while the Lions have found their way to three. More recently though, Longview's success has been more prevalent than McKinney's. Last season's trip to the Regional Round for the Lions was their first trip since 1993. Their 8 win season was their largest win count since registering 8 wins in 2004. Compared to Longview, who has had just one eight win season since King took over in 2004. Last season's 14 win season for the Lobos was their 13th 10 or more win season in the 19 years under King. The Lions will be coming into the 2023 campaign very much loaded, however. And a win over the Lobos would be the perfect start to a high expectation season.

All I know is Longview is going to have a pretty good defense. I think this will be a 21-17 type game.

Definitely going to be a nail bitter.

McKinney looks primed for a great season, no doubt, with a ton of talent.

Lobos, obviously, have brought back a ton of talent. QB, again, will be the deciding result on the season. If Longview can get a good game out of whomever gets named #1, really a chance to make a statement I feel.

Do you go as in depth researching a non district opponent? Looking at position battles and all that or do you just sit back and enjoy the game?

I may go watch this game. I'm not gonna drive to the northern burbs to watch us play Plano West but I will drive to McKinney to see the Lions and the Lobo's go at it.
